TWENTY

NAYA

11:16 P.M.

Rain began to fall. A sudden deluge of fat, cold drops that slapped Naya right in the face. Overhead, the sky cracked, and a flash of lightning splintered the black blanket of night. As if energized by the discharge of electricity, the waves swelled. They clawed at the oversized yacht—Poseidon come to life to drag them down to the ocean’s depths.

Or maybe Naya was being dramatic. Not that being on a boat with a murderer didn’t entitle her to some overwrought emotions.

“One of you did this!” Taylor’s shout was highlighted by another clap of thunder. “And I’m not waiting around for you to kill me, too. I’m going to my room and locking myself in.” Lightning flashed, illuminating her pale skin and wide, frenzied eyes.

“Taylor—” Naya stepped forward, but Taylor held up her hands.

“Naya, if you were smart, you’d come with me or find someplace else to hide.” She backed away. “I don’t trust any of them, and you shouldn’t, either.”

Thunder rolled overhead like a train as Taylor turned and sprinted from the beach club.

Naya rushed after her. Taylor wasn’t thinking clearly. She’d just lost one of her friends and her boyfriend in the most horrific ways, but she couldn’t keep running off by herself. There was strength in numbers, and Naya genuinely believed that her friends were innocent. It had to be a third party. Besides, if one of her friends was responsible, they had to remain in a group to subdue the killer when they struck again.

The thought made Naya cold even as she ran, lungs burning and heart beating against her ribs.

Naya galloped down the hallway, as the door to their room slammed shut and the lock clicked into place.

Music continued to play, wafting into the corridor from Derek’s cabin, where he and Amelia remained tucked away, blatantly ignoring the chaos tearing the boat apart. To be honest, she couldn’t blame them.

“Taylor!” Naya shouted, knocking on the cabin door. “What are you doing? It’s not safe, and I don’t have my key. Open up.”

“Leave me alone!” came Taylor’s muted reply.

“Taylor—”

“Leave me alone!”

“Fine.” Naya sighed. She supposed that if she’d just seen Étienne’s dead body, she wouldn’t want to be around anyone, either. “But stay locked in our room and don’t open the door for anyone.”

“Leave me alone!”

Naya backed away from the door, hands up in surrender. “I am! I’ll just find my way back, then.”

She walked past Derek’s door, throwing it a cutting glance before going back down the corridor. She and Étienne should have locked themselves in her room as soon as she’d found out he was on the boat and before he’d confessed to being a complete klepto. Ignorance was sometimes bliss.

Naya let out a long exhale and stopped in the center of the hall where it branched off to the right and the left. Turn or keep going straight? She’d never approached the beach club from this part of the boat. To be honest, she’d been too lost in thought to even be sure of how many turns she’d already taken.
